Après s'être intéréssé à la description générale des structures dans l'espace occupé par l'église à trois nefs, l'ouvrage met l'accent sur les vestiges de structures antérieures à sa construction. The Basilica of Sv. Marija Velika near Bale is, along with the early medieval Cathedral in Novigrad, one of the most important Carolingian monuments in Istria. It is a part of a monastery complex, the remnants of which are still being excavated and researched. The church manifests traditional architectural forms : the origin of the three-aisled basilica with three-apsidal sactuary with polygonal apses can be traced back to the time of Emperor Justinian, and the typology of capitals follows the famous 6th century examples from the basilica of Eufrasius in Pore(...), representing a variant of the type used in Constantinople and Ravenna. The hand of the stone-mason, « The Master of Bale capitals », was recognized also at some other Carolingian sites in Istria, and the products of his workshop were recognized as the first coherent pre-Romanesque sculptural opus in Istria, dated to the last quarter of the 8th century, to the time of important missionary activities in the areas under Carolingian rule.

L'Istria, grazie al gran numero di testimonianze che vi sono documentate, è un territorio di prioritario interesse per lo studio delle architetture religiose tardoantiche e altomedievali. Finora gli studi si sono concentrati su quelle conservate in alzato, ma da alcuni anni sono stati avviati alcuni progetti di scavo stratigrafico allo scopo di investigare anche quelle sepolti in relazione alle trasformazioni dell'insediamento.
Nel volume, curato da M. Jurkovi(...) e J.-P. Caillet vengono pubblicati gli scavi del complesso di Bale, di grande valore per la monumentalità dei resti rinvenuti e per il gran numero di informazioni raccolte che illustrano la storia del sito tra alto e basso medioevo.
