©Electre 2025

Synopsis. Romeo and Juliet have come back to life and have been married in secret by Friar Laurence. The newly weds have fled to Mantua to get away from Prince Escalus, uncle to Paris, killed by Romeo. The Prince intends to weaken the leading families, among which are banker Montague and landowner Capulet, the fathers to Romeo and Juliet. Both worthies will be reconciled by their common bereavement. Yet, their relentless rivalry will be rekindled and tear the city apart as it hears the disputed news of their children's rebirth and marriage. Both heads of houses will be imprisoned but later freed following the demise of Romeo's desperate mother. The ambitious Prince seizes on the couple's illegal wedding as a major opportunity to destabilize the Church. He also relies on the citizens' support for the young lovers threatened by the Bishop with proceedings according to Inquisition law. How will they survive in Mantua, pursued by misfortune, separated from their families, devoid of material means ? What will be the destiny of the mythic couple, heralds of the Renaissance and Humanism ?
